Video

These videos were created to demonstrate clinical signs of Sarcocystis neurona encephalomyelitis in the horse and to explain how to use the field screening test for EPM.  You may send us your video, email us for your case number.  Learn about EPM and see our horse of the week on our BLOG

  • Rio has EPM.  The depression and vestibular signs are prominent.

Rio has signs of EPM.  He also has laminitis and other metabolic issues.  The depression and wobbly head indicate the organism is in his CNS.  The ataxia and weakness are prominent.  His Peptide ELISA support the diagnosis of EPM.

  • Rio is resolving many of the signs of EPM in this video.  There are more video's below showing his progress.

Rio is not depressed and his weakness and vestibular signs are much improved.  He responded quickly to Oroquin-10 although he had received other anti-protozoal therapy prior and during the Oroquin-10 treatment.  There are several videos below showing his progress.

  • Ataxic mare with Wobbler Syndrome

There are subtle differences in the gait that move CVM (cervical vetebral malformation) above EPM on the differential list as a cause of ataxia in this horse.  Peptide ELISA and neck radiographs confired a diagnosis of CVM

  • Acute Sarcocystis neurona encephalitis in a horse.

This horse, Pilot, has severe, acute encephalomyelitis due to S. neurona organisms in the CNS.  The organism was isolated from the brain tissue.  This horse demonstrates a grade III neurological lameness/ataxia and has central nervous system disease including vestibular deficits.

  • Abnormal eating behavior in a horse with EPM
This horse displays abnormal eating behavior that developed after contracting EPM.  This was an observed change in her behavior and is considered an early sign of disease.  This same behavior is seen in 10% of horses with acute onset of EPM in experimental cases.
  • Ataxic horse with acute EPM.

This video shows the horse at three times during his crisis.  Initially you see him as he is recovering although still a grade III.  He is 110 days after infection.  The second section shows him at the initial treatment, at 80 days post infection and just after he experienced a seizure.  At the time of the seizure he had EPM for 80 days with mild signs of ataxia, grade I, and vestibluar lesions indicative of central CNS disease. In the last section he is shown a day after initial treatment. This horse progressed to a grade I with intensive treatment and is maintained as a pasture pet.

  • Ataxic Mare with Wobbler Syndrome

This mare had been diagnosed with relapsing EPM.  Results from the Peptide ELISA indicated neck films were appropriate.  A lesion was found on radiographs and a confirmed diagnosis of Wobbler Syndrome was made.

  • Rio is going up and down hills.  It will take careful hand walking up and down to regain his muscle strength.
