New technology may differentiate symptomatic from asymptomatic S. neurona infections. The use of strain identification may lead to discerning highly neurovirulent, neuroinvasive S. neurona from low virulent infections in the horse. We have identified two unique proteins that discern all phenotypes of S. neurona that infect horses. These proteins do not bind antibodies to species other than neurona in the genus sarcocystis. The technology has been licensed and the test is available for purchase. The individual peptides or proteins can be purchased for research use. Contact us for details.
The Missouri Horse
Horses either have antibodies to S. falcatula from infections with this organism or antibodies raised to Sarcocystis infections (S. fayeri) cross-react with some antigens of S. neurona, probably SnSAG4. The author (Marsh AE, Vet Parasit 95 (2001) 143-154 stated that S. falcatula antigens can be recognized by S. neurona infected horses, the oposite may be indicated here.

The sensitivity and specificity of the SAG 1 ELISA was determined in induced infections using SnSAG 1 S. neurona merozoites. Twenty-four and 14 chronic experimentally induced EPM cases were evaluated. The parameters included AI SAG 1 index, SAG 1 ELISA, lameness determined by blinded exam, ataxia determined by blinded examination, EPM score, and EBI immunoblot. See the tabulated data

Available technology limits effective treatment and prevention of EPM in horses. However, novel solutions are available through a veterinary client patient relationship (VCP) under code of Federal Regulation (9 CFR 107.1).
Oroquin-10
Oroquin-10 is a highly effective anti-coccidiocidal drug compounded with an immune stimulant, levamisole. The quinalone drug kills intracellular protozoa more rapidly and at a lower dose than conventional agents used to treat EPM by targeting protozoan mitochondria. In vitro cell assays determined that S. neurona and Neospora hughesi are eliminated at one tenth the dose of other coccidial agents used in EPM. The oral compound begins killing within 1 day. A prevention stratagy can be used to eliminate chronic relapsing EPM at 1/100th the costs of conventional therapy. Click here to see more...
